HRSA expanded the Contract Pharmacy program in 2010 when covered entities were allowed to register unlimited number of contract pharmacies to purchase and dispense 340B medications to patients. Since then, the contract pharmacy program has increased drastically over the course of decade, from a mere 1,300 to now 28,000 unique locations acting as contract pharmacies. The intent of expansion was to allow covered entities to be able to expand the reach of 340B medications to patients and to further enable covered entities “to stretch scarce federal resources as far as possible, reaching more eligible patients and providing more comprehensive services.”1
With the rapid growth of contract pharmacy program, the risk of non-compliance grew with it and the need to provide proper oversight of the program became more important. HRSA states, “In order to fulfill the ongoing obligation of compliance, all covered entities are required to provide oversight of the contract pharmacy.”2 Especially now that Contract Pharmacy program is under scrutiny by some manufacturers, it is extremely important that your entity evaluates resources currently allocated to monitoring of contract pharmacy program. If your entity does not currently have a 340B Expert overseeing all aspects of the Contract Pharmacy program, you may have missed revenue-generating opportunities and potentially be putting the 340B program at risk for non-compliance.
